LEGISLATIVE ALERT FROM THE STATE AFL-CIO !

STATE SENATE TO VOTE ON LABOR-SUPPORTED BILLS

On Tuesday, February 19, the Senate has scheduled on the floor a number of bills of concern to labor and Senators need to hear from you now to urge their support:

SENATE BILL 108: Teaching Labor History in Schools requires each school district to include in its curriculum the history of organized labor in America and the collective bargaining process.  Younger workers are coming into the workforce today without any knowledge of the labor movement. Labor history is the greatest story never told!

SENATE BILL 353: UW System Faculty and Academic Staff Collective Bargaining Rights extends the freedom to organize to some 17,000 employees of the UW System who are currently denied that right.  The faculty and academic staff employed by the University of Wisconsin System are the largest group of public employees still denied the freedom of association—the basic right to vote whether they will be represented through a union of their choice.

SENATE BILL 171:  Impartial Justice Bill creates a Democracy Trust Fund to provide full public financing for qualified candidates who run for State Supreme Court. This independent, impartial public funding source will help ensure that candidates for our highest court do not need to rely on wealthy special interests to fund their campaigns. It will help restore public confidence that decisions made by elected justices are based on their truly impartial interpretation of the law and not influenced by campaign contributors.

SENATE BILL 194 (Substitute Amendment 2):  This legislation requires the state Department of Commerce to regulate the installation and maintenance of thermal system insulation (a product used in a heating, ventilating, cooling, plumbing or refrigeration system) and establishes minimum licensing requirements.
